SOP
Standard Operating Procudures (SOP) to use these instruments
Now are you interested in doing experiments in ALM-CF? Here is the SOP to approach ALM-CF.
The goal of this SOP is sololy intened for:
- Protect users from being hurt by high-energy lasers and potential health hazard of bio-organisms.
- Improve the usage efficiency of all large devices.
- Promote cooperations between intra-labs of the university.
- Users raise requirements for imaging.
- The users, Prof. Dr. Lipp and Dr. Tian meet and discuss about the project/experiment, including goals, experiments, samples and experiment procedures.
- Based on the current hardware configuration of ALM-CF, these points will be decided: 1) feasibility, whether there is suitable device to finish the tasks; 2) users’ autonomous ability of handling large devices; 3) the duration of the planned experiments.
- If the experiments are not feasible, we stop potential co-operations.
- If a feature of large devices is necessary and not yet implemented, the users and we apply for it. We then continue to next step.
- For short experiments and quick test of hypothesis, Prof. Dr. Lipp or Dr. Tian will commit the experiments, so that extra user training can be avoided. Meanwhile, the device usage time can be reduced, results can be achieved earlier and quicker.
- For long experiments, Prof. Dr. Lipp or Dr. Tian will give the users enough laser safety and biosafety (S2) training, so that the users can enter ALM-CF and do their own experiment. User will need to sign the safety agreement.
- For long experiments, the user should have enough background to handle large devices that they will use. If not, users will be guided to achieve enough but basic knowledge through our Teams Channel.
- For long experiments, Prof. Dr. Lipp or Dr. Tian will give the user enough training on how to operate the devices before the users start their experiments.
- After the users can do their experiments independently, as assured by Prof. Dr. Lipp or Dr. Tian, the users will be given an account in the booking system. The users will book their time slots and do their experiments, independently, without being interfered.
The whole simplified workflow is illustrated in the right flowchart. For more and detailed information, please refer to our Teams Channel.

Notes: In our Teams Channel, users will find the following materials:
1. Laser safety instructions and biosafety S2 instructions in ALM-CF, and the confirmation form.
2. Detailed flowchart of the workflow.
3. Videos that introduce the basic knowledge about the large devices and advanced imaging in ALM-CF. A knowledge quiz is even included for the users to self-test.
