Subject-specific pedagogy in Romance Languages study programmes

In addition to practical language training and subject-specific studies in Linguistics, Literature and Cultural Studies/Cultural History, subject-specific pedagogy is another important pillar of the teacher training degree programme.

As the second training phase has been shortened to 18 months, trainee teachers no longer have the familiarization period which was previously possible. Trainee teachers have to undertake teaching demonstrations in their first semester and are therefore required to start teaching immediately. Students are thus expected to have a sound knowledge of subject-specific pedagogy at the beginning of their Referendariat (mandatory period of professional training for teacher training) which is taught by lecturers in subject-specific pedagogy.

First state examination (Staatsexamen)

The regulations for the performance of oral examinations in accordance with the Teacher Training Examination Regulations I in the subjects of French and Spanish can be found below (in German). 1. Scope of the examination

The oral examination in the first state examination (Staatsexamen) consists of a subject-specific part and a subject-specific pedagogic part (20 minutes each). The subject-specific part is chosen by the candidate from one of the following fields: Literary Studies, Linguistics and Cultural History/Cultural Studies. The two parts of the examination should relate closely to each other; the choice of the subject-specific part therefore has an impact on the subject-specific pedagogic part. As far as possible, Literary Studies should be examined with Literary Pedagogy, Linguistics with Linguistic Pedagogy or language topics relevant to teaching, and Cultural History/Cultural Studies with Pedagogy of Cultural History/Cultural Studies. The two parts of the examination should be interlinked; the order of the examination parts is set in consultation with the examiners.

Candidates choose—in consultation with the examiners—two areas of specialization each in the chosen subject-specific area and subject-specific pedagogic area; candidates are expected to have general and comprehensive knowledge. In the field of Literary Studies, at least two to three primary works per specialization area and eight secondary literature works per area are covered as a rule; three secondary literature works should focus primarily on the topic. The same requirements apply for Linguistics and Cultural Studies.

Total duration of the examination: 40 minutes (a total of 20 minutes for the subject-specific part + a total of 20 minutes for subject-specific pedagogic part)

2. Examiners

Candidates may select members of the professorial staff to examine their subject-specific knowledge and may select members from the group of teachers on partial secondment to the university to evaluate their didactic competencies.

Students are kindly asked to contact the examiners in good time before registering for the oral examination (approximately six months in advance). 

3. Language of examination

One of the examination parts is assessed in the foreign language. Linguistic errors in the target language that impair communication about the subject-specific/pedagogic content will be taken into account in the assessment of subject-specific performance.

4. Calculation of the grade

The oral examination grade is composed equally of the grade for the subject-specific part of the examination and the subject-specific pedagogic part of the examination.
