Catalytic Icebreaker — AI-supported introduction to programming for biology (B.Sc.)

The semester-long course is intended to provide biology students with new AI-supported learning tools such as ChatGPT to give them an initial introduction to programming. In the most striking sense, it is primarily about (1) breaking the ice! Using illustrative, biological examples, hands-on, with AI in the background, basic concepts of programming are taught and enthusiasm for biological data is sparked! You will learn (2) basic skills in R, a freely available, widely accepted programming language in biology/bioinformatics, to prepare typical biological data from raw state to publishable image. And (3) shown how to add extensions in the form of packages in R to add domain- or problem-specific functionality.

Lecturer: Dr. Thomas Hentrich
Format: Tuesdays, 2-4 p.m. (can be adjusted in advance if necessary); in presence, maximum number of participants: 20
Start: 14.10.2025
