From linguistics to software development

Klara Merkel originally wanted to become a translator. To achieve her goal, she decided to pursue a bachelor's degree in English Linguistics and Language Science at Saarland University. But during her studies, the Saarland native stumbled upon the IT sector, which continues to spark her interest and has now even become her professional home. Klara Merkel has been working as a software developer for four years now. Before that, she worked as a web administrator for about a year. Even though Klara's path has not always been straightforward, looking back, the graduate would make the same decision again: ‘Ultimately, it was mainly because of my English skills that I got the job that I initially thought I had no chance of getting. It's the mix that makes the difference!’ Klara Merkel's advice to current students is: ‘There are many exciting career paths besides the traditional professions such as doctor, teacher or lawyer. Be brave and apply for the job that interests you, even if you don't meet all the requirements. No one expects career starters to be able to do everything. And ultimately, even a rejection is not the end of the world.’
