Systems Engineering B.Sc.
If you're curious about technical systems, enjoy maths and science, like digging into how things work and love finding creative solutions to complex problems, then systems engineering is made for you!
If you're not fully confident in maths, you can take a preparatory course to refresh your knowledge and brush up your skills before starting the programme.
A work placement (industrial internship) lasting at least 8 weeks is recommended before starting your degree programme. If needed, you can also complete the internship during your studies.
Prospective students with a German higher education entrance qualification can enrol directly online. You can find all the information you need about enrolment on the Bachelor's degree programme as well as further information for students with a non-German higher education entrance qualification on the
In the first four semesters of the B.Sc. programme, you'll study core engineering principles. After that, you can either continue with a broad-based curriculum or choose one of four specializations:
Areas of specialization:
- Electrical Engineering deals with complex systems that are primarily electrical or electronically based. It encompasses the core areas of circuitry and microelectronics, including hardware-related programming.
- Mechanical Engineering focuses on mechanical products and their design and manufacture. Applications include robotics and automotive engineering.
- Integrated Systems is aimed at students who are generalists and are keen to study the aforementioned specializations in particular depth. For example, students learn modern analytical design methods.
- Sustainable Engineering focuses on sustainable technologies and methods. The aim is to develop and produce products and systems that are resource- and energy-efficient and as sustainable as possible.
All students can also acquire a basic understanding of management and organization. Practical projects, language courses and other general interdisciplinary courses (Studium Generale) provide a wide range of opportunities for students to tailor their studies to their individual interests. Through industrial placements / internships, students also acquire key practical skills and gain initial experience of working life.
You can find detailed information on the modules required for your chosen specialization in the study plan. For a description of the individual modules, please refer to the module catalogue. Links to both documents are provided in the programme documents section (see below).
By undertaking an industrial placement / internship with a company, students have an opportunity to familiarize themselves with working practices in their chosen field. In addition to promoting understanding and motivation for their studies, this also facilitates their transition into working life. Working together with the host company's employees allows students to gain insights into the company's technical, economic and, in particular, social realities. Completion of the industrial work placement /internship is evidenced by a report book which must be kept by the trainee and a certificate from the training company.
The Bachelor's degree programme requires a total of 8 weeks of basic work experience, which should ideally be completed before the start of the programme.
How can I find a suitable company?
The required industrial work placement / internship is usually carried out in medium-sized or large companies that are recognized as training organizations, for example:
- Industrial companies
- Companies with large electrical engineering or mechanical engineering departments
Important for recognition:
- The company must provide practical industrial experience.
- Research institutes or university-affiliated institutes are generally not suitable.
Help with your search:
- The Department of Systems Engineering does not arrange work placements / internships, but does offer advice on choosing a suitable provider.
