I studied Computer Science at Saarland University from around 2006/2007 to 2011.
What job did you do after your studies?
After completing my degree, I initially worked as a project engineer at VAB in Berlin. I then worked as a software engineer at DACHSER in Kempten in the Allgäu region. For the past seven years, I have been working as a consultant in a role that combines IT and public finance for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, including two years in Mauritania and, for the past five years, in Zambia.
Why did you study at Saarland University?
I completed my higher education access course at Saarland University and very quickly fell in love with the city and the entire region. Life in hall of residence D, where students from all over the world came together, was a particularly formative experience for me. The international atmosphere made a lasting impression.
Do you have any tips for current students?
Halls of residence parties are one of the best ways to meet new people. I can also highly recommend the wide range of free sports activities – from football to Pilates – available in the various sports halls. In my opinion, student assistant positions are excellent preparation for future working life, as they provide an ideal combination of theory and practice.
Do you have a special anecdote or story from your time at Saarland University?
I had my first Dippelappes (a traditional Saarland potato dish, Ed.) in the Mensa – a culinary experience that has stayed with me to this day.
What was your favourite place on campus?
Some of my favourite places on campus were hall of residence D, the Mensa and the computer science library.
Why did you study this subject specifically?
My decision to study Computer Science was, at first, rather by chance. Looking back, however, it was absolutely the right choice, as Saarland University was already back then – and presumably still is today – one of the best universities in the field of computer science and, in particular, artificial intelligence.
How did you make the transition to working life?
My transition into working life was very straightforward and targeted. After completing my degree, I took on a position as a project engineer at VAB in Berlin. I was able to apply the theoretical knowledge I had gained during my studies to real-world projects for the first time, while at the same time developing key professional skills such as project management, teamwork and communication with customers.

I particularly appreciated the wide variety of optional subjects, which allowed me to broaden my horizons. There were also the professors, who were not only highly knowledgeable in their fields but also very dedicated, and who were always open to questions and discussions.
What do you wish you had known when you started your career?
Looking back, I wish I'd realized sooner just how crucial practical experience is for a successful career start. While theory is the foundation for any academic career, practical experience – such as through work placements, student assistant roles or project work – is a huge help in finding your feet more quickly in day-to-day working life.
What surprised you during your studies?
I was particularly surprised by theoretical computer science. Both its mathematical depth and high standards were challenging, but in the long run it helped me develop a very structured and analytical way of thinking.

I'd really love to go to another Uni-Fest where the professors are the DJs. The unique combination of daily academic life and student life was typical of Saarland University and reflected the strong sense of community.
What other alumni services would you like to see?
I would like to see regular alumni meetings, such as an annual reunion, to maintain contact with the university and former fellow students.
