Studying abroad
Studying a foreign language requires a longer, well-structured stay in a region where the language is spoken. Besides improving language proficiency, the time you spend abroad also fosters important intercultural skills for your later professional life.
The degree programmes offered by the Department of Romance Languages and Literature therefore include mandatory periods abroad. These vary in duration and content depending on the programme learning objectives. While the B.A. in Romance Languages and Literature requires a six-week work placement in a country in which the target language is an official language, the examination regulations for the teaching qualification for a Gymnasium (academic-track secondary school) generally stipulate a six-month stay in the relevant language region. (For details on the duration of stays required in each programme, please refer to the relevant study regulations).

In addition to making individual arrangements for your stay abroad, you can benefit from both the organizational and financial support that is available through established programmes. The Language assistants programme (FSA) is a programme that spans multiple languages and is particularly aimed at students training to become teachers.
There are also various language-specific opportunities to go abroad, usually offered as part of university partnerships:
PROMOS scholarship programme
Saarland University is once again running its UdS Mobil scholarship programme for the coming year, funded by the DAAD (PROMOS programme) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
Funding is available for study periods abroad, internships, courses aligned to the student's degree programme, language courses, study trips, competition-related travel.
Application deadline for stays during the period:
- January to July: 15 November
- August to December: 15 May
'Programme d'Études en France' (PEF) mobility programme
The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has launched a new Programme d'Études en France (PEF) for students in the second year of their Bachelor's degree in Germany. The programme is managed by the French Embassy in Berlin in collaboration with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is designed to help students gain academic and cultural experience in France, particularly those whose studies are closely tied to the French language and culture. Students can choose from four French partner universities.
