In Memoriam Shireen

It is with great sadness that we say farewell to our former colleague and friend, Shireen, who passed away on 11 August 2026 at the age of 26. Shireen has been a member of our chair since 2025. With her professional expertise and her warm and caring nature, she was a valued member of our group and left a lasting impression on our chair. We will particularly remember her kindness and generosity, as well as the many personal encounters and conversations we were fortunate to share with her. She was not only a highly valued colleague, but also a person whose presence enriched our community.

We will remember Shireen with gratitude and affection and will keep her memory alive. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are with her family, her friends, and all those who were close to her.

We welcome our new member in the team: B.Sc. Ole Wolf !

The chair is connected to the Department of Mathematics of the Saarland University and located in building E1 1 on the campus at Saarbrücken.

Our research areas are:

• Inverse problems in theory and applications
• Numerical analysis
• Optimization
• Parameter identification for PDEs

with a special focus on

• Theory and algorithms for vector and tensor tomography (2D, 3D)
• Modelling and simulation for defect detection in composite materials
• Parameter identification for elastic wave equations
• Regularization methods in Banach spaces
• Theory and algorithm development for terahertz tomography
• Interpolation and approximation by neural networks
• Learning of neural operators for inverse parameter estimation
