Prof. Dr Daniela Braun has been Professor of Political Science with a focus on European Integration and International Relations since 2022. Prior to that, she taught and conducted research at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich since 2010. In her research, she focuses on topics from the field of EU politics. European elections, European parties and the European party system as well as citizens and voters and their attitudes and behaviour in the European multi-level system are among her core topics. Her academic teaching focuses on the political system of the European Union, the current challenges of the multi-level system of the European Union and political sociology. Daniela Braun's research has been published in the following political science journals, among others: European Journal of Political Research, European Union Politics, German Politics, International Political Science Review, Journal for European Integration, Journal of European Public Policy, Party Politics, West European Politics, Zeitschrift für Vergleichende Politikwissenschaft and Zeitschrift für Parlamentsfragen. In addition, she has funded and carried out various research projects (BMBF; DFG; Horizon 2020; Horizon Europe) on Europe-related topics.

About the person

Prof. Dr. Daniela Braun (*1980) lives in Saarbrücken with her partner and two daughters.

  • She studied Sociology and Romance Studies at the Ruprecht Karls University of Heidelberg and the Universidad de la Laguna in Spain from September 2000 to July 2007. Her master's thesis was on the topic of "European Identity: Theoretical Considerations and Empirical Analyses".
  • From 2007 to 2012, she did her doctorate at the German-French doctoral school CODESE ("Comparing Democratic Societies in Europe") at the University of Stuttgart on the topic of "Political Trust in New Democracies in Europe" with Prof. Dr. Oscar W. Gabriel (University of Stuttgart) and Prof. Dr. Sigrid Roßteutscher (University of Frankfurt).
  • From 2010 to 2022, Daniela Braun taught and researched first as a research assistant and then as an academic councillor at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. There she habilitated with the topic "Multi-Level Party Politics in Europe" and researched how the structural conditions of the multi-level system of the European Union affect party competition in Europe.
  • Since July 2022, she has been Professor of Political Science with a focus on European Integration and International Relations at Saarland University.
  • Since the end of 2022, she has been deputy managing professor of the Department of European Social Research.
  • Since May 2023, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Cluster for European Studies (CEUS).
  • Since September 2023, she has been co-lead of the Interdisciplinary Institute for Societal Computing (I2SC).
  • Prof. Daniela Braun is also a confidential lecturer at the Heinrich Boell Foundation in Saarland.
