Research Network "TITAN"

Artificial Intelligence in the justice system

The opportunities of modern software technologies for the legal system are being investigated in a new research network of the Daimler and Benz Foundation. The scientific focus of the so-called Ladenburger Kolleg “Technological Intelligence for the Transformation, Automation, and User-Orientation of the Judicial System (TITAN)" is on large language models, LLMs, and their importance for the justice system.

In order to create, interpret and apply legally relevant texts, AI systems such as ChatGPT are already being used in individual cases - but so far in a largely uncoordinated manner. The new funding project aims to help systematise the use of learning software, because artificial intelligence opens up unknown opportunities: routine tasks could be automated, complex problems easily solved, and individual requirements anticipated. At the same time, however, this entails many risks, and users often have reservations, hopes and fears. Acceptance on the part of members of the judiciary, lawyers, and persons involved in the administration of justice is an absolute prerequisite for the efficient use of artificial intelligence.

In the TITAN research network, experts from various specialist disciplines - legal informatics, business administration, work and organisational psychology as well as public law, civil law, criminal law and legal theory - are investigating whether artificial intelligence can efficiently carry out functions in the judicial system in order to strengthen fundamental rights, democracy, and the rule of law. In addition to the legal framework conditions for the respective deployment scenarios, key psychological issues will be analysed, including the views of external stakeholders and international perspectives. Prof Brodowski is also involved as a representative of criminal law.
