History of the department

Saarland University was founded in 1948 under the aegis of France and the Université de Nancy taking a new European perspective and merging French and German educational traditions, thus offering classes in both languages. The Faculty of Law and Economics was amongst the four founding faculties.

Exceptionally influential scholars have worked both in economics and business administration alike since the 1950's, helping the Department of Economics at Saarland University to gain national and international recognition that is still going strong today. Over the decades, the department with its diversified degree programmes turned to one of the most efficient departments at Saarland University.

Ever since the structural changes at the university in the winter semester 2016/17, the Department of Economics has been part of the new Faculty of Human and Business Sciences.
