Digitalization of the Individual (Bachelor)

Course Description

This course focuses on the conceptual foundations and implications of digitalization from an individual perspective. Thereby, the course addresses the fundamentals of the digitalization as well as the digitized individual as itself, as social being, as citizen, as customer, and as employee.

Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to introduce key concepts of digitalization and digital transformation. In addition to the fundamental concepts, additional topics relevant to the digitalization, such as data protection and privacy, social media, eGovernment, eMobility, eCommerce, and digital business models are addressed. A central aspect of the course is a critical reflection of the positive and negative aspects of the digitalization, especially its effects on the individual, in the context of organization and society. 

The course is complemented with a capstone project, in which students apply the lecture content to contemporary topics of the digitalization.  

Learning Objectives

After the successful participation in the course students can: 

  • explain the concept of digitalization and digital transformation from an individual perspective. 
  • discuss the digitalization of the individual in various contexts, such as data protection and privacy, social media, eGovernment, eMobility, eCommerce, and digital business models. 
  • reflect positive and negative effects of the digitalization of the individual.

Course Procedure for the Winter Term 2021/2022

  • Lecture Content: 
    • Every week a video presenting the lecture content will be available in Moodle.  
    • For each lecture topic there will be multiple minor exercises in the Moodle course. The exercises aim to repeat important parts of the lecture and give you an idea of how exam exercises might look like. 
    • There will be a forum in Moodle where you can post your questions and comments about the lecture video. The questions will then be collected and discussed in the following interactive session.  
  • Interactive Session: Tuesday, 14:15 – 15:45, Hybrid: In person and via MS Teams (Lecture) 
    • In the interactive session, selected lecture content is repeated and discussed with students.  
    • In addition, there will be interactive tasks, presentations from industry, and opportunities for your questions.  
    • The session will be in held in hybrid mode: You can join in person in the lecture room (3G regulations apply), but you can also join online via teams (to be confirmed). 
  • Capstone Session: Monday, 14:15 – 15:45 via MS Teams (Exercise) 
    • For the course you have to work in pairs to apply the lecture content for six different assignments during the semester.  
    • Together you will prepare a written report in the capstone project together with a fellow student.   
    • Each week, there will be live capstone sessions in which you can discuss, ask questions, and receive feedback on the assignments. In addition, each group has a mandatory presentation of their assignment in the capstone sessions.  
    • The session will be held online in MS Teams.
