Development and Management of Information Systems (Bachelor)

Course Description

This course explores the foundational principles, methodologies, and tools essential for developing and managing information systems (IS). Emphasis is placed on the entire System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including stages such as planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing, and maintenance. Additionally, the course covers management practices like project management, change management, and aligning IT with business goals. Students will acquire both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in creating and managing information systems.

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to introduce fundamental concepts related to the development and management of IS. On the development side, the course covers various aspects of the SLDC phases, including requirements gathering, modelling techniques, user interface design methods, and essential concepts such as user experience, usability, and implementation strategies. Regarding management, the course explores aligning business and IT, managing organizational changes, strategic IS, delivering IS solutions, implementing IT strategies, and understanding IS business value and success management. 

The course is complemented with a capstone project, in which students apply the lecture content to contemporary topics of the development and management of IS.   

Learning Objectives

After the successful participation in the course students can: 

  • explain the principles, methodologies, and tools used in the development and management of Information Systems (IS)​.​ 
  • explain and understand the concepts of the different phases of the System Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing and maintenance​.​ 
  • explain and understand management practices, like project management, change management, and how to align Business with IT​.​ 
  • gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in developing and managing IS​.

    The password to the Moodle course is communicated in the first interactive session.   
  • Grading:  
    Mid-term exam: 20%, Final-exam: 40%, Capstone Project: 40%. 
  • Explanation concerning the exams:
    There are TWO exams.
     
    Mid-term exam (30 min): will take place in the 8th week of the semester. Covering the content from the first half of the semester only.
    Final exam (60 min): will take place at the end of the semester during the regular exam season, date tba by Vipa. Covering the content from the second half of the semester only (= the content from the first half will be excluded). 

Course Procedure for the Winter Term 2024/25

Lecture Content:  

Every week a video presenting the lecture content will be available in Moodle.   
For each lecture topic there will be multiple minor exercises in the Moodle course. The exercises aim to repeat important parts of the lecture and give you an idea of how exam exercises might look like.  
There will be a forum in Moodle where you can post your questions and comments about the lecture video. The questions will then be collected and discussed in the following interactive session.   

 

Interactive Session: Tuesday, 10:15 – 11:45h, hybrid (B4.1, 0.05 ) (Lecture)  

In the interactive session, selected lecture content is repeated and discussed with students.   
In addition, there will be interactive tasks, presentations from the industry, and opportunities for your questions.   
 

 

Capstone Session: Tuesday, 14:15 – 15:45h (B4.1, 0.07) (Exercise)

For the Capstone project, you have to work in pairs to apply the lecture content for various assignments during the semester.   
Together, you will prepare a written report for the capstone project. 
Each week, there will be live capstone sessions where you can discuss, ask questions, and receive feedback on the assignments. In addition, each group has a mandatory presentation of their assignment in the capstone sessions.
