Development and Management of Information Systems (Bachelor)

Course Description

This course explores the foundational principles, methodologies, and tools essential for developing and managing information systems (IS). Emphasis is placed on the entire System Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including stages such as planning, analysis, design, and implementation. Additionally, the course covers management practices such as project management, change management, and aligning IT with business goals. Students will acquire both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in creating and managing information systems.

Course Objectives

The purpose of this course is to introduce fundamental concepts related to the development and management of IS. On the development side, the course covers various aspects of the SDLC phases, including feasibility analysis, requirements gathering, modelling techniques like Use Case Diagrams, user interface design, and essential concepts such as user experience and usability. Regarding IS management, the course explores how to align business and IT, manage organizational changes, leverage strategic IS to gain a competitive advantage, implement IT strategies, deliver IS solutions, and measure their business value.

A capstone project, in which students apply the lecture content to contemporary topics of the development and management of IS, complements the course.  

Learning Objectives

After the successful participation in this course, students can:

  • Explain the principles, methodologies, and tools used in the development and management of Information Systems (IS).
  • Explain and understand the concepts of the different phases of the System Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including planning, analysis, design, implementation, testing and maintenance.
  • Explain and understand management practices, like project management, change management, and how to align Business with IT.
  • Gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in developing and managing IS.

  • Access to Moodle: The password to the Moodle course is communicated in the first interactive session.  
  • Grading: Mid-term exam: 20%, Final exam: 40%, Capstone Project: 40%
  • Explanation concerning the exams: There are TWO exams. Mid-term exam (30 min): Will take place on 03.12.25 (to be confirmed). Covering the content from the first half of the semester only. Final exam (60 min): Will take place at the end of the semester during the regular exam season. The date is announced by Vipa. Covering the content from the second half of the semester only (= the content from the first half will be excluded).

Course Procedure for the Winter Term 2025/26

Lecture Content:  

Every week, a video presenting the lecture content will be uploaded to Moodle. A forum in Moodle will be available where students can post their questions and comments about the lecture video. These questions will then be collected and discussed in the following interactive session.  

 

Interactive Session: Tuesday, 10:15 – 11:45h, (B4.1, 0.07) (Lecture)  

Each interactive session will begin with a brief, interactive quiz on Mentimeter to recap the lecture content covered in the video, followed by a review of selected lecture content and discussions with students.
In addition to that, there will be work on interactive tasks in groups, presentations from the industry, and opportunities for your questions.  
 

 

Capstone Session: Tuesday, 14:15 – 15:45h (B4.1, 0.07) (Exercise)

For the Capstone project, students have to work in groups to apply the lecture content through assignments during the semester.
