Biophysics at UdS

The investigation of biological processes increasingly requires the use of physical knowledge and physical methods; physical strategies and approaches enable comprehensive insights into complex biological processes.

Currently, initiatives are increasingly being taken worldwide to train qualified scientists who operate at the interface between biology and physics. Saarland University is taking on a pioneering role here with its B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree programs and the close link between physics and the life sciences.

Biophysics at the UdS combines the study of physics with the acquisition of basic biological knowledge, on which graduates can easily build specialized knowledge. The six-semester Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree course in Biophysics aims to teach the methods and skills that form the current standard in biophysics at an early stage. This basic knowledge can be deepened in a four-semester Master's course leading to the degree "Master of Science (M.Sc.)".

Building on mathematical and scientific foundations, the course enables students to solve technical and scientific problems, particularly at the interface between physics and biology. In addition, students are enabled to work on complex problems using modern mathematical, computer-aided and experimental methods. This is a degree course for which enthusiasm for physical methods is a necessity. The course therefore differs significantly from a degree in biology or biochemistry. It is not suitable as a substitute for a place in these subjects. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, the course places high demands on students.

Due to their broad and fundamental training, biophysicists have very good career opportunities, e.g., in medical technology and biotechnology as well as in academic research institutions. There is a great need for highly qualified and broadly trained scientists in these fields.
