Biophysics (B.Sc.)

In the interdisciplinary Bachelor's degree program in Biophysics, students receive a broad education in experimental physics, theoretical physics and mathematics. This is supplemented by modules from the fields of chemistry (general, inorganic and organic chemistry, biochemistry), biology (human physiology, cell biology, genetics), and the special field of biophysics.

Physics is the main focus of the program. A total of 70 CP of the 180 CP acquired over the course of the six semesters of the Bachelor's degree are accounted for by lectures and exercises in the fields of physics and mathematics. In the field of experimental physics, Bachelor students deal with mechanics, vibrations and waves (1st semester), electricity (2nd semester), optics and thermodynamics (3rd semester), as well as quantum and atomic physics (6th semester). Theoretical physics covers calculation methods in mechanics, analytical mechanics, electrodynamics, quantum physics and statistical physics. Linear algebra and analysis complete the mathematical background of the course.

From the second semester onwards, special biophysical modules are offered which highlight important interdisciplinary aspects of biophysics. Numerous laboratory practicals, which are completed during the course of study, show students the rules necessary for setting up, carrying out and documenting scientific experiments and teach practical skills. The Bachelor's thesis in a biophysics-oriented research group concludes the course.

The interest in biophysics and basic knowledge can then be deepened in a four-semester Master's program leading to the degree "Master of Science (M.Sc.)".
