Professorship for Physical and Theoretical chemistry

Professor Dr. Michael Springborg

In our group, we are working solely theoretically and have no chemical labs. We concentrate on developing theoretical methods and accompanying computer programs for the calculation of properties of materials. Recently, we have developed a theoretical method, PooMa (Poor Man's Matetial Optimization) for automatic identifying the "best" material out of a very large class of materials.

The properties of our interest include:

  • Structure
  • Electronic structure
  • Total energy
  • Response to electromagnetic or mechanic perturbations
  • Chemical reactivity
  • Catalytic properties
  • Optical properties

The materials of our interest include:

  • Isolated molecules and molecules in solution and on surfaces
  • Crystals
  • Surfaces of crystals
  • Clusters and nanoparticles
  • Polymers and chain compounds
