Research

The Department of Language Science and Technology is one of the leading institutions in language and speech research in Europe. The current flagship project is the collaborative research center on Information Density and Linguistic Encoding (SFB 1102) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The  department is involved in the cluster of excellence on Multimodal Computing and Interaction, also funded by DFG. We also host a significant number of European and nationally funded projects.

The aim of the SFB is to investigate the extent to which notions of surprisal and the optimal distribution of information offer a unifying explanation of observed patterns of variation in language use within and across linguistic levels, and in a range of communicative settings.

The Cluster of Excellence brings together researchers from the department of Language Science and Technology, the department of Computer Science, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence, and the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems.

The joint colloquium of the department of Language Science and Technology and SFB 1102 takes place on Thursdays at 4.15 p.m. in the conference room in building C7 4.
