Clinical Pharmacy

Lecture

Pharmacy, 5th to 8th semester · one part per semester, four-semester cycle, students can join in any semester · 90 minutes per week · examination subject in the Second State Examination in Pharmacy

The lecture deals with drug therapy in the individual patient: why does the same dose lead to different concentrations and effects in different people, and what does this mean for dosing? Each of the four parts is self-contained. Many sessions start with a patient case that is solved at the end with what was learned. We work with summaries of product characteristics (SmPC), study data and public datasets, calculate pharmacokinetic parameters and simulate concentration profiles. Some examples come from our group's research. With the PMX Trainer, students can try out kinetics and dosing themselves.

Parts 1 and 2: Variability, safety and patient care

  • Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, including therapeutic antibodies
  • Pharmacometrics and model-informed precision dosing
  • Drug interactions and pharmacogenetics
  • Special patient groups: organ impairment, pregnancy and lactation, children, older adults
  • Influencing factors such as time of day, heat, sex and gender
  • Clinical trials and evidence-based medicine
  • Medication safety, pharmacovigilance and medication review
  • Pharmaceutical services and adherence

Parts 3 and 4: Indications

  • Drug therapy of major diseases across the main therapeutic areas
  • Applying the content of parts 1 and 2 to each therapy

Seminar

Pharmacy, 7th semester · every winter semester · four-week block seminar: two full-time weeks before lectures start, then two weeks of afternoon sessions · examination subject in the Second State Examination in Pharmacy

In the seminar, students apply what they learned in the lecture to individual patients. Each topic starts with a short introduction, followed by small groups working on patient cases. In the two weeks of afternoon sessions, each group carries out a complete medication review. This includes a patient interview in which students from another group play the patient, and the group presents its case at the end. Students also practise counselling in our training pharmacy and go on excursions, for example to a hospital pharmacy. A small adherence study using an app runs alongside the seminar. Students practise therapeutic drug monitoring with our PMX Trainer.
