During your PhD

Re-registration

To retain your status as an enrolled or a registered doctoral research student, you must re-register each semester. (Note: No matter whether you are enrolled or registered as a doctoral student, the process of re-applying to extend your existing student status is called – in both cases – 're-registration'.) Towards the end of each semester, you will receive an email explaining how to re-register for the following semester. All the relevant details can also be found on the re-registration web page.
If you do not re-register correctly, Saarland University will assume that you are not continuing your PhD. In this case, your enrolment or registration will terminate at the end of the semester in which you were last enrolled or registered, i.e. on 31 March or 30 September.

You can apply to change your doctoral student status from 'enrolled' to 'registered' and vice versa at any time. Please submit your request to amend your doctoral student status and send it by email to the Admissions Office: studium(at)uni-saarland.de.

Special services for our PhD research students

As a doctoral student at Saarland University, you have access to a wide range of opportunities for personal and professional development, nearly all of which are free of charge. Services available include training programmes in research methodologies, German language courses and information and guidance on financial issues.

Completing your PhD / Withdrawing from your PhD programme

If you do not want to continue your doctoral studies, you can deregister from the university via the SIM student web portal.

Once you have successfully completed your doctorate, the relevant doctoral studies office will record completion on your student record. You do not need to submit separate notification, nor do you need to deregister actively. All you need to do is not re‑register for the semester after the one in which you completed your doctorate.

If you wish to withdraw from your doctoral research project, you can actively apply to deregister via the SIM Portal, or simply not re‑register for the following semester. If you require written confirmation of deregistration, you should deregister actively. Important: If you are withdrawing, please inform the relevant doctoral studies office or the Dean’s Office in your faculty that you are discontinuing your doctoral research.
