European integration and policy instruments

The module taught by Prof. Dr. Daniela Braun provides students with an in-depth theoretical and practical insight into the political and institutional development of Europe.

The lecture "European Integration and policy instruments" offers an overview of the vertical and horizontal integration of the European Union as well as its social, political and legal background and consequences. In order to illustrate the influence of European impulses on national policy, selected policy fields are examined by way of example. In addition to regional and structural policy, strongly and slightly Europeanised policy fields are examined and compared with each other.

In the tutorial, European regional and structural policy is specifically examined. Based on this policy field, the formulation and implementation of complex funding instruments in legal, political and social contexts will be examined in an exemplary and practice-oriented manner. The strategic goals of the EU, the implementation in the member states and their challenges as well as socio-political consequences (e.g. solidarity debate and Euroscepticism) of such targeted policy promotion are discussed. In presentations and assignments, the students independently deal with different topics with regard to the instruments and the challenges associated with them.

The students

  • have in-depth knowledge of vertical and horizontal integration processes of the European Union after successful completion of the module;
  • are familiar with the theory and practice of European policy formulation and design;
  • are able to critically reflect on political instruments of the European Union as well as aspects of the political and institutional development of the European Union independently;
  • are able to independently deal in depth with the chosen topics of the courses.

On 6 June, a simulation game will take place in building C5.3 room 2.06 as well as in two other rooms!
