Information Summer semester course 2025
Registration for the semester German language courses in summer semester 2025 and instructions for the placement test
We are pleased that you have registered for our German language courses in the summer semester 2025.
Please note: We send all information exclusively by e-mail. Please check your e-mails (including spam folders) regularly and save our email address deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de in your contacts.
*Important information for beginners*:
If you are a beginner, you don’t have to take the placement test.
Only if you have received a place, we will write you an email in mid-April 2025 (in the week before lessons start). Then you will also be informed in which beginner group you are in and when the lessons will take place. You can ignore the instructions for the placement test. Please read on from -> Course beginning (below).
*For all others*:
All others must take a mandatory placement test.
Take the placement test online on your own computer/laptop until until Monday, 07 April 2025, 10:00 a.m. (deadline). It must be finished by this time. Be sure to respect the allowed test time (105 minutes) and start early enough, i.e. not just before the deadline. The test is available for several days. Please take the placement test early! If you have any problems, please write us an e-mail (deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de).
Period for the online placement test:
Monday, 10 March 2025, 10 a.m. until Monday, 07 April 2025, 10 a.m.
(Not for Beginners!)
CET is valid.
Important:
- For the learning platform Moodle you need a valid personal UdS identification (sometimes also referred to as HIZ-ID). If you have a new personal UdS identification (not an ID for guests!), it must be older than two days for you to be able to use it properly. Here you will find instructions on how to download the user account information in the SIM application Portal. You must also have changed the master password (on the website: https://idp0.hiz-saarland.de/passwd/).
- If you do not have a regular UdS identification, you need a guest identification. If you don’t have received it yet, please send us an e-mail until Friday, 04 April 2025, until 11 a.m. (CET) with the subject “Gastkennung Sommer 2025” to: deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de ! We will send it to you in time. No automated mail is initiated, please be a little patient and wait for our reply.
- Take the placement test yourself and without help from others, and do not use any aids (Google Translator or KI, e.g. Chat CPT). You will only harm yourself, as this will lead to the determination of a false level!
- Before taking the placement test, please read the following information carefully!

You find the placement test on the online learning platform online learning platform Moodle (new URL!):

Please note:
If you are a Member of Saarland University, you have to continue with Step 1 A) and then Step 2). If you are not a Member of Saarland University (e.g. guest), you have to continue with Step 1 B).
Select Universität des Saarlandes below the line „Login (UdS) Mitglieder“ and wait a moment.
Now select your UdS account or enter your UdS access: e.g. abcd001@uni-saarland.de
Then enter your valid password for your UdS account and click the button "Anmelden".
Step 1 B)
If you are not a Member of Saarland University.
Note: If you do not have a regular UdS identification, you need a guest identification. If you don’t have received it yet, please write us an e-mail with the subject “Gastkennung Sommer 2025” to: deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de until Friday, 04 April 2025, until 11 a.m. (CET)! We will send it to you in time. No automated mail will be initiated, please be patient and wait for our response.
If you already have a new Guest ID from us:
Enter the guest username (field: Kennung) and the password (field: Password) that you received from us by e-mail in the fields under Local login (at the bottom of the page). Then click on "Login" and wait a moment.
If you have a new Guest ID from us:
Select Saarland University (Shibboleth) below the line "Login (UdS) members" and wait a moment.
You may have to accept " An den Dienst zu übermittelnde Informationen” (Information to be sent to the service) by clicking on "Akzeptieren” (Accept).
You may need to confirm „Infos zum Datenschutz“ (Info about data protection) by clicking on “Ja” (Yes):
Perhaps you have to save/open a PDF document (if it opens in the browser: then go back to the arrow). Then click on "Ja" (Yes) again.
Step 2)
To get to the placement test, click on: Startseite --> Internationales Studienzentrum Saar (see „Zentrale Einrichtungen“) --> Studienbegleitende Deutschkurse
Step 5)
Please read the explanations of the tasks on the first page of the test carefully. These rules apply to the entire test. If you have forgotten them, you can always come back to the first page.
The test consists of five parts with grammar, C-test and listening comprehension. Each part is on one page. You can switch between pages at any time using the buttons at the bottom (Previous page / Next page) or the block bar at the top right.
You have a total of 1 hour 45 minutes (= 105 minutes) to complete the test. Plan 20 minutes for parts I to IV and 25 minutes for part V. Note the time remaining in the upper right corner.

Step 6)
If you have completed everything, finish the placement test by clicking on „Versuch abschließen“.
Note: The first completed test is evaluated. If you have technical problems, you can repeat the test twice. In this case, please send us an e-mail (deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de) as soon as possible and explain which technical problems have occurred. Otherwise we will evaluate the first attempt.
Results of the placement test:
If you have been given a place in one or more courses, we will write you one or more e-mails (admission) on Monday, 14 April or Tuesday, 15 April 2025, in the week before classes start. In the e-mail you will read which course you have been admitted to and when/where the classes will take place. – Please check your e-mails regularly (including spam folders) and save our email address deutschkurse(at)isz.uni-saarland.de in your contacts.
When registering, you could specify a course as a priority. We will do our best to give you a place in this course. In all other courses you select, we can only place you in if places are free. There is no guarantee of a place when you register or write the placement test.
Unfortunately, we cannot give you any information about the results of the placement test/ division into courses before the start of the course.
Course beginning:
Courses will start in the week from Tuesday, 22 April until Friday, 25 April 2025. You will receive the exact dates by e-mail (Zulassung zu den Kursen/admission to the courses) in the week before classes start.
You may only participate in the courses for which you have received written admission from us!
Costs/Course fees:
Our semester courses are free of charge for UdS students (UdS BSc/MSc/ERASMUS/Guest Student), doctoral candidates and PostDocs of the UdS, UKS Homburg ERASMUS-Students and PhD Students, Freemover enrolled at UdS. They do not have to pay any course fees.
All others who are not UdS students (e.g. students of HfM Saar, HBKsaar, htw saar, non-enrolled doctoral students/postdocs from affiliated institutes, employees of the Saarland University and their relatives, trainees, Freemover not enrolled at UdS and other guests of the Saarland University) have to pay course fees. This fee is 180 Euro / semester for a beginner's course, 120 Euro / semester for a general language course and 60 Euro / semester for a theme course.
An invoice for the course fees with our bank account information will be sent to you by e-mail at the earliest two weeks after the start of the course. Until then you do not have to pay anything.
Cancellation of the course and apologies:
If you are absent without excuse from the first lesson of the course, you will automatically lose your place in the course. Those who apologise to us in advance by e-mail will keep their place.
