In 2021, Saarland University and Villa Vigoni e. V. – German-Italic Centre for the European Dialogue established the "Exzellenzlabor Europa". Following the overarching research theme of the CEUS Europe-World(s) – Projections, Reflections, Transformations, the aim of this longterm cooperation is to organize joint events that promote academic discussions on Europe with special foci on Europe’s relations with the world and the question of how 'concepts' of Europe are projected, transformed and reflected. In particular, the cooperation is intended to support early career researchers.
The cooperation was inaugurated on 11 September 2021 with a ceremony at Villa Vigoni.
On 8 September 2021, Prof. Dr Markus Messling spoke to Saarländischer Rundfunk about the establishment of the "Exzellenzlabor Europa".
Exzellenzlabor Europa 2021
The "Exzellenzlabor Europa" 2021 took place from 9 to 13 September 2021 as an International Summer School for young researchers in the humanities and social sciences at Villa Vigoni. It was entitled "Restitution, Reparations, Reparation – Towards a New Global Society?" and asked about the ethical consequences associated with the call for material reparations: (How) can reparation be conceived if it cannot compensate materially for what has been destroyed, but needs to be more than a purely symbolic act? In several sections, the summer school explored the possibilities and limits of a multidirectional commemorative culture by taking into consideration different historical constellations in which crimes against humanity have shaken up the very idea of ‘humanity.’ The summer school thus offered a forum to rethink Europe and its relations with the world.
The event took place on the initiative of Prof. Dr Christiane Solte-Gresser and Prof. Dr Markus Messling and was organised by Mario Laarmann, Carla Seemann and Laura Vordermayer.
