Tasks of the University Sports Center

Tasks of the University Sport Center

University Sports Center is a central facility of the Saarland University. Its task is to offer University members a sports program which is adjusted to the needs of the students and employees and is oriented – where applicable – towards the latest scientific findings.

Promoting the sport is defined in the Hochschulrahmengesetz (Framework law on universities and colleges) HRG § 2 section 4 as one task of the University.

Out of this legal general framework, the following tasks and objectives of the University sport arise:

- Providing a demand-oriented sports program

- Developing a permanent motivation towards sport

- Maintaining and improving the physical and psychic capacity and stability
   resulting from sport

- Assisting in becoming responsible for a healthy lifestyle

- Improving the communication among the members of all Saarland Universities

- Strengthening the identification with Saarland University

- Improving the integration of foreign students and fringe groups

- Supporting top athletes studying at Saarland University in the compatibility of
study and sports career within the label “Partnerhochschule des
Spitzensports” (“partner university of the top-class sport)

The main focuses of the program are:

- Leisure activities and popular sports offers

- Individual training on a preventive basis in the Uni-Fit fitness centre

- Health-oriented physical activities

- Competitive sport

- Preventive measures for employees “Uni in Bewegung”

In total, the Hochschulsportzentrum offers over 70 sports and 500 classes per annum. The sport program is offered as weekly classes (especially classes where the content builds on each other). Moreover, Hochschulsportzentrum offers compact courses, workshops on the weekends and excursions in different outdoor sports. The uni sport program goes along with the semester structure. In the semester break, we organize a holiday sports program in cooperation with AStA (students' union executive committee).

Saarland University is a member of the Allgemeine Deutsche Hochschusportverband adh, the umbrella organization of university sport in Germany. Every year, adh organizes several University championchips and further eduction events, represents the interest of the university sport nationwide and provides a network for the single universities.

Dr. Bastian Popp wahr.
