Prof. Dr. Éamonn Ó Ciardha

Im akademischen Jahr 2010/2011 hatte der irische Historiker Dr. Éamonn Ó Ciardha die Gastprofessur Europaicum der Universität des Saarlandes inne. Er wurde 1968 in Monaghan/Irland geboren, studierte Geschichte und Gälisch am University College in Dublin und promovierte an der University of Cambridge. Nach mehreren Aufenthalten als Gastwissenschaftler in Kanada und den USA lehrt er seit 2005 Irische Geschichte, Sprache und Literatur an der University of Ulster im nordirischen Derry. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen auf der irischen und europäischen Geschichte von der Reformation bis zur Französischen Revolution sowie auf der modernen Geschichte, Politik, Kultur und Sprache Irlands und der irischen Literatur.

Am Institut für Anglistik und am Institut für Geschichte lehrte Dr. Ó Ciardha Irische Geschichte und Literatur von den Anfängen bis in die Gegenwart und stellte den Zusammenhang zur politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung Irlands im europäischen Kontext dar. Im Wintersemester 2010/11 richtete die Fachrichtung Anglistik der Universität des Saarlandes (British Literary and Cultural Studies and North American Literatures and Cultures) parallel zur Gastprofessur Irland ein Irish Semester aus.

Host country Ireland 2010/11

The Irish Historian Dr. Éamonn Ó Ciardha was visiting professor at the University of the Saarland for the academic year of 2010/2011. Born in Monaghan/Ireland in 1968, he studied History and Gaelic language at the University College in Dublin and did his PhD at the University of Cambridge. After visiting lectureships/professorships in Canada and the USA he has taught Irish history, language and literature at University of Ulster in Northern Irish Derry since 2005. His main research interests are Irish and European history from the reformation to the French Revolution, modern history, politics, culture and language of Ireland as well as Irish literature.

At the English department and the History department of the University of the Saarland  he gave lectures on Irish history and literature from the beginnings to present and referred to the political and social development of Ireland in the European context. In the winter term 2010/2011 the chairs of British Literary and Cultural Studies and of North American Literatures and Cultures organized an Irish Semester, a celebration and exploration of Irish literature and culture.

Ghnóthaigh An Dr Ó Ciardha bun-chéim sa Stair is sa Ghaeilge i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Baile Átha Cliath agus tá iar-chéim máistreachta sa Stair aige ó Ollscoil Náisiúnta na hÉireann. D’oibrigh sé ar thráchtas dochtúireachta ar an tSeacaibíteachas in Ollscoil Chambridge, Sasain, faoi stiúir an Dr. Breandán Bradshaw. Foilsíodh a chéad leabhar, Ireland and the Jacobite Cause, 1685-1766: A Fatal Attachment sa bhliain 2002. Tar éis postanna taighde agus ollúnachtaí cuairte a bheith aige in Obar Dheathain, i dToronto, i Notre Dame is i gColáiste na Trionóide, Baile Átha Cliath, thosaigh sé ag teagasc na staire i gColaiste Mhic Aoidh, Ollscoil Uladh i 2005. Tá spéis ar leith aige i stair na hÉireann ón Reifirméisean Phrotastúnach go dtí Reabhlóid na Fraince, i stair na ndeoraíthe Éireannacha ar an Mhór-Roinn sa 17ú is san 18ú chéad déag, agus i bpolaitíocht, i litríocht agus i gcultúr na hÉireann trí chéile.

Le linn dó a bheith in Ollscoil Saarbrücken, theagasc sé cúrsaí ar litríocht na Gaeilge is an Bhéarla i Roinn an Bhéarla, mar aon le cúrsaí ar Stair na hEireann agus ar Éirinn san Eoraip ó Shéarlas V i leith go dti bunadh an Chomhphobail Eorpaigh.
