I have been appointed to a junior professorship at Saarland University. What do I need to know?

The most important regulations and procedural rules for junior professors at Saarland University are contained in the framework regulations governing junior professorships (currently available in German only) here:  Rahmenordnung . We strongly recommend that you take the time to study these framework regulations in detail, as they include important procedural information that will help you organize and plan your junior professorship.

Should you hold a W2 professorship with tenure track to W3, there is a special framework: Rahmenordnung

Key steps you should take early on in your junior professorship:

  • The dean of your faculty will invite you to an orientation session during the first six months of your professorship. If no one contacts you about the orientation session, please get in touch with the faculty administrators.
  • Each junior professor is entitled to a mentor. You are free to choose your mentor, who will be appointed by the dean of the faculty. Speak to your preferred mentor as soon as you can and, if they agree to take on the role, arrange to have the mentoring agreement registered.

There are a number of different types of junior professorship, each of which is subject to a slightly different organizational and administrative framework. However, one aspect that they all have in common is that junior professors are subject to at least one formal evaluation. The details about the evaluation process are set out in the framework regulations for junior professorships and you should get acquainted with the details as early as possible. If you have any questions about the procedures explained in the framework regulations, please contact the dean’s office of your faculty for guidance.

You may also want to speak to the specialist advisers in the Human Resources Division who provide assistance to junior professors. Please refer to the HR Division web page for further information.

If you have any questions, suggestions, comments or requests, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
