My new working environment: A quick overview of the Saarbrücken and Homburg campuses

Saarland University is a campus university located in Saarbrücken (Saarland University) and Homburg (Saarland University Medical Center UKS). The university’s main campus is situated just outside the city limits of Saarbrücken – the state capital of Saarland . The Saarland University website and the Saarland University Medical Center website provide quick access to information on important topics. For a quick overview of current facts, figures and other useful information about Saarland University, take a look at our facts and figures page.

Saarland University has six faculties:

  • Faculty of Human and Business Sciences (HW)
  • Faculty of Medicine (M)
  • Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science (MI)
  • Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology (NT)
  • Faculty of Humanities (P)
  • Faculty of Law (R)

Each faculty is represented by a dean’s office. Some faculties may also have a chief administrative officer (Geschäftsführung), who, though not part of the dean’s office, supports the dean’s office by carrying out key administrative tasks. Members of a faculty who need to resolve an organizational, financial and administrative issue should contact the chief administrative officer for assistance.

To help you find your way around the Saarbrücken campus, campus maps have been installed at numerous locations on campus. To make it easier to find a specific building, each building has its own letter-number identification code. The building with the most service points is the Campus Center (Building A4 4) located next to the ‘Universität Campus’ bus stop. The Campus Center houses the Card Issuing Office, the IT-Service-Desk, a card-loading terminal, the International Office Welcome Center) (For information on the bus services run by the local public transport operator, please visit the SaarVV, Saarländischer Verkehrsverbund). Some of the university’s central administrative services are located on the Saarbrücken campus, while others are situated at the nearby Meerwiesertalweg site. (For an overview of the main divisions at Saarland University and their roles and responsibilities, please go to the dedicated Information page) The administrative divisions located on campus are: the President’s Office (PB), Education and Quality Assurance (LS), Campus Development and Construction Management (CB), Facility Management (FM), and parts of Research and Technology Transfer (FT) and Central Procurement (ZB). The units located at the off-campus Meerwiesertalweg site are: Human Resources (P), Accounting and Finance (HF), parts of Research Management and Technology Transfer (FT) and Central Procurement (ZB) and the University IT Centre (HIZ). The Meerwiesertalweg site has car parking spaces in front of the building. As a member of university staff, you can also use your UdS Card to travel free of charge on one of the local bus services that run between campus and the Meerwiesertalweg site (alight at the bus stop ‘An der Trift’. Buses run fairly frequently and the journey lasts around seven minutes. Saarland University has a large staff and student refectory (Mensa) that is organized and run by the Studierendenwerk (Saarland Student Services), but campus is also home to a large number of other restaurants and cafés.

The offices of the Faculty of Medicine are located at the Saarland University Medical Center. The faculty is subject to the same administrative regulations that govern the other faculties at Saarland University. Other facilities at the Homburg campus include a university sports centre, a Mensa refectory for staff and students and a branch office of the General Student Committee (AStA). The simplest way to travel to the Homburg campus is by car or by the AStA shuttle-bus service, that runs three or four times a day during the main teaching period between Saarbrücken city centre, the Saarbrücken campus and the Homburg campus. The Homburg campus has campus maps installed around the campus and the buildings are numbered for ease of identification.
