Korea Week at Saarland University – 2 to 7 June 2025
Look forward to an exciting week full of culture, games, film and cuisine. You can find all the information here.
There are many good reasons to learn Korean.
And we’re not just talking about improved job prospects. Korean ranks among the top 20 most spoken languages in the world, with over 75 million speakers. South Korea’s economy is booming, and Korean companies like Samsung, Hyundai, and LG are among the largest globally.
But beyond that, South Korea is a country of stunning natural beauty, still largely unknown to many. Seventy percent of Korea’s landscape is mountainous, and Jeju Island, located in the south, is one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
Korea is also a food lover’s paradise, renowned for its diverse and flavorful cuisine.
Most people, however, associate Korea with its vibrant entertainment industry. The Korean Wave, known as Hallyu, began sweeping across Asia in the 1990s and has since reached Europe. Everyone has heard of K-pop, as well as Korean dramas and films. The 2020 film Parasite was a major international success, even in Hollywood.
Korean culture itself is equally impressive. Hospitality is highly valued, and doors will often open for you, even if you only speak a few words of Korean.
