FAQ

Registration, placement tests and course enrolment:

What is the Language Centre?

The Language Centre is one of Saarland University's central and interdepartmental institutions, where university members can learn and improve their skills in more than 15 languages.

As a central institution, we are not part of a faculty and serve students in all degree programmes. Saarland University students, staff and non-enrolled students (Gasthörer) can participate in our semester and intensive language courses. We also offer courses specifically for staff members. We also offer courses for school students in Saarland who are attending grade nine or above.

Does the Language Centre offer courses specifically for staff?

Yes, the Language Centre offers English and French courses for staff in partnership with the Trilingual Campus. We offer a variety of formats ranging from classic courses to casual 'language breaks' to individual language support.

I don't have enough time during the semester to take a language course. Are there courses during the semester break?

Yes, the Language Centre offers intensive language courses that typically take place shortly before the start of the semester. Over a period of eight days, with four hours of courses per day, learners taking intensive language courses cover the same content they would be taught during a semester-long course of two hours per week. Course participants are eligible for professional development leave.

There are also courses for university staff during the non-teaching period.

Does the Language Centre offer courses for school students?

In cooperation with the Saarland Ministry of Education and Culture, the Language Centre provides language courses for school students in Saarland who are attending grade nine or above. The course sessions align with the school year, meaning they begin in September and do not take place during school breaks. Courses for school students take place in the Language Centre, typically on Saturday mornings. We offer languages that students cannot usually study in school.

New here? Information on making an account with the Language Centre What tips do you have for registering for a semester or intensive language course?
  • Please ensure that you have made an account with the Language Centre. Haven't made an account yet? Make an account here.
  • Please check that you are able to log in each semester a few days before course registration begins by logging into your account under 'My Courses'.
  • Check the course description to find out if you need to prove your language level with a placement test or by submitting your grades from a previous course before registering. Placement tests are valid during the semester in which they were taken as well as during the two following semesters. Course grades are valid for the three semesters following completion.
  • Take note of when registration begins for the course you would like to take and log in at the proper time.
  • Our system awards places in courses in the order in which users logged in. Once you have logged in, the system will let you know if you have a place in the course or on the waiting list, or if you were unable to enrol.
  • More questions? You can find us at our Service Point (building C5 4, room 3.01). Please keep our opening hours in mind. You can also contact us by email at service(at)szsb.uni-saarland.de or on Teams under SZSB Service Team.

Where can I find my placement test results?

Placement test results are not posted automatically after the test is completed, but rather marked at specific times. Once your placement test has been scored, the score will be available under My courses. Please note the information provided when you place your mouse over your placement abbreviation in the 'Grade' column. You can use your placement abbreviation to filter out courses in the coming semester that you are not yet qualified for, showing only those you can actually sign up for.

I am not a Saarland University student. Can I still sign up for a course?

If you are a Saarland University employee, you can enrol in Language Centre courses free of charge.

Students from universities within the following alliances are also welcome to enrol:

  • Universitätsverbund Südwest (RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau, University of Koblenz, University of Trier)
  • University of the Greater Region (RPTU University Kaiserslautern-Landau, University of Lorraine, University of Liège, University of Luxembourg, University of Trier, htw saar)
  • Transform4Europe (University of Alicante, University of Trieste, Vytautas Magnus University, Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski, University of Silesia, Estonia Academy of Arts)

Not affiliated with any of the universities above? No problem! You can still sign up for a course as a non-enrolled student.

Do I need specific skills to be able to participate?

Basic computer skills as well as an internet connection are required, as the majority of our courses are organized using the online learning platform Moodle. Moodle is used for communication among students as well as between the lecturer and the students. Coursework is also posted there. Some courses take place on MS Teams. Placement tests are also held online.

If you need support getting acquainted with platforms used at Saarland University, the Teaching and Learning Centre offer a course in German introducing MS Teams, Moodle and the campus management system LSF. The course is also open to non-enrolled students.

How much do Language Centre courses cost?

Courses are normally free. University staff, students and non-enrolled students (Gasthörer) can take up to three courses during the semester free of charge.  Non-enrolled students must provide their non-enrolled student certificate.

Can non-enrolled students participate in Language Centre courses?

Non-enrolled students (Gasthörer) can take semester or intensive language courses as long as places are available and as long as they are registered as non-enrolled students at Saarland University for that semester. Please also make sure to set up your account with the Language Centre. If you are registered as a non-enrolled student for several semesters, you will need to provide the Language Centre with your non-enrolled student status certificate at the start of each semester so our staff can reactivate your account and you can sign up for language courses.

Here you will find more information for non-enrolled students.

Where can I find used textbooks for my language course?

There are several options.

  • You may be able to buy or sell your book using the green box at our Service Point (building C5 4, room 3.01).
  • You can also check the online bulletin boards (such as the 'Pinnwand' from AStA General Student Committee or the Studierendenwerk Saarland).
  • You can also search for your textbook on eBay, Amazon, werzahltmehr, Booklooker, etc.
Can I drop a course?

Yes, you can drop a course at any time under My courses. If your module is comprised of several courses, you will need to first deregister from the module as a whole before you can drop the individual courses.

Can I take more than 3 courses per semester?

Our courses are meant to be taken alongside your studies or career. We therefore assume our participants can handle a maximum of three courses. If you have a specific reason for wanting to take more than three courses at once, please write us an email at info(at)szsb.uni-saarland.de.

Browser settings

Please keep in mind that the browser you use and its printing settings can have an effect on how your certificate prints. We recommend using Firefox to print your course certificate.

My course certificate did not print well. What is the problem?

Your course certificate is an HTML document. That means your browser is used for displaying and printing the document. Your browser's features and settings therefore have an effect on how your certificate prints. If the suggestions below do not help, try changing browsers. We recommend Firefox.

The date, URL and other information are printed on the edge of my course certificate. What should I do?

The printing date and URL are added automatically by many browsers. To remove them, you will need to change your browser settings.

In Firefox, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, you can change this setting by clicking 'Print' then 'More settings' and unticking the 'Headers and footers' check box.

My course certificate prints on several pages or is too small. What should I do?

Please adjust the settings in the print menu in your browser and check the print preview before printing again. In Firefox, Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge, you can adjust the size by clicking 'Print' then 'More settings' and increasing or decreasing the number under 'Scale'. If your browser does not allow you to adjust the scale and margins, we recommend Firefox.

Will my course certificate be forwarded to my department's examinations office?

The Language Centre does not forward course certificates. Please either send a digital copy or print your course certificate and bring it to your examinations office.

Can language courses count towards my degree?

Many students would like to count their language courses towards their degree. This is possible in many programmes, but a few conditions need to be fulfilled.

Please:

  •  Check the course description to find out if you will receive ECTS credits for completing the course.Any courses for which you receive ECTS credits can be counted towards your degree as a module element. English and French courses count starting at the B1 level.
  • Get in touch with your examinations office directly to find out if the credits earned during your course can be credited towards your degree.
  • Once you have passed your language course, please provide the course certificate (Schein) to your examinations office. You can provide the examinations office a digital copy or print the course certificate and bring it in person. The Language Centre does not forward course certificates.

Some study regulations set strict criteria regarding which languages and proficiency levels can be counted towards the degree programme. Please keep in mind that due to the large number of degree programmes at our university, our ability to advise you on which courses are recognized is very limited. We therefore ask you to contact your examinations office directly.
