Unter dem Motto "kleine Wunder entdecken" öffnen mehrere Labore der Universität beim Aktionstag "Türen auf mit der Maus" am 3. Oktober ihre Türen für Kinder.

On Saturday 3 October, Saarland University will be taking part in 'Türen auf mit der Maus' ('Opening Doors with the Mouse') – the nationwide open day initiated by the team behind Germany's iconic children's programme 'Sendung mit der Maus' ('The Show with the Mouse'). In keeping with this year's theme, children aged five and over will have the chance to discover the 'little wonders' of science and research in four of the University's school labs.

Admission is free of charge, but advance registration is required.

The following text has been machine translated from the German with no human editing.

On the Saarbrücken campus, the Departments of Materials Science and Computer Science, as well as the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing, will open their doors from 10.00 am; on the Homburg campus, the Department of Neuroradiology will welcome visitors to the ‘Gehirnwerkstatt’ school research centre from 9.30 am to 1.00 pm. Children can also take part in activities organised by several different laboratories; however, when planning their day, please bear in mind that these take place at two different locations (Saarbrücken and Homburg).

The activities in detail:

At the ‘Gehirnwerkstatt’ Pupils’ Research Centre (Homburg Campus), children aged 10 to 15 can become brain researchers themselves and test how thoughts and feelings can be made visible. Finally, they can even guide a floating ball through a maze using the power of their own thoughts.

The Materials Science Pupils’ Laboratory is aimed at children aged 5 to 12. Here, they can try out a wide variety of experiments – for example, observing crystals, investigating dyes, constructing stable bridges out of paper or building a tiny solar-powered car.

In the Acoustics Laboratory at the Fraunhofer Institute for Non-Destructive Testing (IZFP), children aged eight to twelve discover how sounds can be made visible and how sounds can even be used to make objects levitate.

In the computer science pupils’ laboratory (‘InfoLab Saar’), children aged 8 to 12 have the opportunity to get to know the Calliope minicomputer and try out how to programme it using a programming language with puzzle blocks.
