Open Science – Open Access

For a transparent and accessible research culture
Open Science embodies a commitment to making the entire research process transparent and accessible. It aims to ensure that research outcomes, data and methodologies are freely available, thereby encouraging collaboration and meaningful knowledge exchange. By championing transparency and reproducibility, Open Science advances scientific progress and strengthens cooperation across the research community. Through its dedication to open access and the free dissemination of knowledge, Saarland University is helping to address global challenges and to support a public sphere that is more informed and more engaged.
Our principles
- Open Access: We support the publication of research findings in open-access journals and repositories in order to make scientific and scholarly knowledge more readily accessible.
- Open Data: We promote the sharing of research data in open formats so that it can be accessed, used and reused by other researchers.
- Open Methodology: Transparent and reproducible research methods are a core element of our academic practice.
- Open Educational Resources: We make teaching and learning materials freely available in order to broaden and improve educational opportunities for all.
- Open Source: We promote the use and development of open-source software in order to enhance the transparency and reproducibility of experimental and computational results.
Our initiatives
- Open access publication fund: We support researchers by helping to finance open access publications.
- Research data management: We put measures in place so that research data generated by a research project can be organized, stored, securely archived and accessed both during and after the project.
- Workshops and training courses: We run regular workshops and training opportunities on open access, open data and open science.
Free and unrestricted access to scholarly information – worldwide and for all
Saarland University is a signatory to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities. This means that all scientific and academic publications arising from publicly funded research – whether texts, data or software – should be made freely available online to anyone with an interest in them, anywhere in the world. Easy access increases the visibility and accessibility of research findings and helps new knowledge to circulate more quickly.
