Getting your tax ID

The tax number is a personal identification number that is automatically created for you when you first move to Germany. This number will then remain valid for your entire life and will also be used again if you leave Germany and return in the future. If you have lived in Germany before and have received a tax number, please continue to use this same number.

The tax number is created after your registration at the Bürgeramt. This happens automatically, you do not have to apply for it separately.
About six to eight weeks after your registration you will receive a letter with your tax identification number. Please keep this document in a safe place.
If you have an employment contract at Saar University, please inform the Human Resources Department about your identification number.

If you need the tax number earlier, you can ask for it at the Bürgeramt about 10 days after you did the city registration. This service costs €8. You have to again book an appointment for this at the Bürgeramt. To do this, click on "Schnellschalter" and then on "Steueridentifikationsnummer erfragen".
You can also use this appointment if you had previously received a tax identification number but lost it.
