Animal research: Replace – Reduce – Refine

Despite progress with alternatives, some animal research remains essential for medical advances. Biomedical research at Saarland University still relies on such studies where no viable substitute exists. However, researchers at the university are working to keep the number of animal experiments conducted as low as possible and to refine procedures to protect animal welfare.

Scientists at Saarland University are required to apply the 3Rs principle (Replace, Reduce, Refine) when planning, preparing and carrying out their experiments. The Saar 3R Platform (3RPS) website has been set up to help researchers understand and apply tried-and-trusted 3R methods. The 3RPS website lists alternatives to animal experiments as well as research contacts who have established these methods in Saarland.
